We've had a couple days of snow and it's cold enough that it will stay a few days. I need grand kids to build me a snowman.
FYI: It's strange to go to a big city and see at a stop light signs for Austria one way and Italy another. I told Gaylon we need to take a wrong turn on of these times. One of our leaders drove here from Germany the other day and it took as long as for us to get to Traci's in Simi Valley. We even passed a truck from Poland the other day. Funny how excited we got.
Also Croatia beat England in the championship "Football" game. That was a big thing.
We now have an ice skating ring in our square. It reminds me of when Brownie and I took Cami to Sacramento to see theirs. It was so cold and long line we didn't wait for her to try.
A Christmas tree stand is up now. I think they put up their trees on the 24th and then celebrate thru the 7th.
We are great. The Sisters and I are going to bake cookies and goodies today and tomorrow and try to contact every member with a plate full. For FHE we will decorate cookies. I'm going to attempt fudge with their cooking cream and whole marshmallows. Should work...right. I gave the lady that made our Nativity sets chocolate chip cookies this weekend and she had never had any. I have found that with others too. Of course for chocolate chips we have to cut up a candy bar since they don't have don't have chocolate chips here.
Have a great week building for Christmas. Love your kids and grand kids. You just don't appreciate them as much until your away from them.

Christmas is coming
It's hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner. Being a Christian country it's a big deal here and lights are going up on all the streets. I don't see any on homes though, except ours.
We had a great Zone Conf. this past week. Great Christmas dinner and skits. The couples had a white elephant exchange which is traditional in our family so that was fun.
We got together and have our chapel all decorated and ready for our Christmas Program on the 21st. The Missionaries are pulling it together and it will be fun. We have a nice program planned.
We hope all is well with you and that you're happy and enjoying this time of the year. We are great. Their putting up all kinds of booths around the square in Varazdin. It's fun to walk around and see what everyone has to sell. I guess the bigger celebration here is from the 25th of Dec. to the 7th of Jan. We'll see.
It's a fun time of the year to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving Week
I can't believe Nov. is almost over. This month marks the halfway point for both us and Cami. Now that is unbelievable.
This Thanksgiving week has been hard. Most of our kids have gathered at our home in Ione. I'm glad tradition has continued. It sounds like they had a great week.
Things here have been pretty much the same. The day after Thanksgiving we put on a Branch dinner. Now many members came, but we felt good about giving them a chance to come join us. We and the missionaries had a great time.
We've had our first snow of the year. It lasted a couple days, but now it has warmed up a little.
We are thankful for our family and friends. Also the new friends we have made and the faith the Lord has entrusted in us. Our prayer is that the work will move forward and we may do our part.

Day of the Dead
This holiday Nov. 1st is the Day of the Dead/All Saints Day. What a bustling week it has been. They say Varazdin is City of the Flowers, but I didn't know there could be so many flowers. All week the were flowers on every corner being sold and well on the street of every village. Traffic was so heavy all week. So much going on.....cleaning the cemetery and whatever else they were doing. The kids were out of school Thurs. and Fri.
Thurs. the town was so empty...well, everyone was at the Cemetery. They say we have the prettiest Cemetery in Europe and the 3rd in the world. Who knows. We went to the Cemetery that evening with a NM couple. You take a candle and put it on your families grave or leave one by the Crucifix for anyone else that has died. There are no lights in the Cemetery but it was so lite up from the candles. Pretty cool.
Then we went out to dinner. These were some of the choices on the Menu:
Grilled Sucking Pig Liver
Grilled Sucking Pig Onion Fried.
Black Pudding with Potatoes and Sauerkraut
Frog legs
Fried Squid
Grilled Minced Meat Fingers
Smoked Neck
Dried Tongue
Sasha said this wasn't the most authentic restaurant, but his wife from Italy didn't like the other one. We had a great time.
We are doing great and loving to share these new traditions. Of course they don't celebrate Thanksgiving so the Christmas decorations are starting to come out.

Hello everyone,
Things haven't been to different. We did have a Chinese Night Activity and about 25 came. They said it was to American, but I don't know what else we could have done. We fixed Chinese food and had Chinese words everywhere.
We had Zone Conf. which is always fun to get with the other couples. We even played a few hands of card with another couple at the hotel after dinner. Now that was a treat.
We went back out to Erica's house and the ride was incredible. I hate to see all those pretty leaves fall.
Halloween wasn't much. We had institute and then had everyone stay for Chili. It was fun to visit with the few that were there.
The Branch is still moving slowly. I finally got the Elders tracting over here in our neighborhood and we took them out to one of the villages. The got 18 contacts. This will be great if they will all let them back in. One in my neighborhood came over for lunch on Sunday. Very nice lady. Her daughter wouldn't come being embarrassed. I'll have to go over and meet her so she will feel comfortable.

Harvesting Corn
This past weekend we went to Bro. Lukacek's and helped him harvest his corn. That was a process of walking in front of the tractor with a bucket in hand. We would shuck the corn and pick it. You walk between two rows and do them both. This is all field corn. We started about nine in the morning, did one field, had a break and did a second field. We had another bite to eat, visited and headed home. We got home about nine with very sore fingers. It was a good work out.
Sunday was council Sunday. Then we had ten for lunch which totally filled up our little apt. I was ready for a nap.(which I didn't get)

I need to let you all know we are here and doing fine. We have had a couple of rough weeks, but I would be crazy to say we didn't think we would. We are working hard and trying to pull this Branch together As a District we have tried to figure out how to strengthen the foundation of this Branch.
My goodness, wasn't General Conference wonderful. Our sessions are 6PM and 10PM. We are so grateful for having BYUTV. Elder Kopischke is our area pres'cy counselor that spent the weekend here teaching us Sat. and Sun. We were able to be taught by him all day Sat. at Zone Conf. , then your Sat. evening District Conf. Mtg. a Sun. morning meeting with the new member and investigators. (We had the most there), then the general meeting. How fun to see him speaking at general conf. We kept waiting for him to say "hello to Croatia", ha ha. I guess Preach My Gospel was good enough.
We really are great. Going to Celje to teach Institute is such a beautiful dirve now with all the fall colors showing up. It should be even better Thur. Taking these little off the wall roads is something a tourist will not see much of. Now when it starts snowing it will be an interesing ride.

The last few weeks have been pretty normal. I think I've had my highest high and lowest lows these last couple weeks. I think and truly believe that Satan can see the great work coming to this part of Europe and has his angles out in full force..and yet miracles are still happening. Take for instance Cami. She has a great work in Poland and Satan did his best to counter that. It did not happen and a true miracle happened. Watching our Missionaries and their registration.....it was truly a miracle.
We have been teaching and befriending a Seventh Day Adventist family. They are very strong in their faith. Such a good family. We have lots of interests the same. They have been juicing apples and grapes and Gaylon has been out there to help. A touch of home.
We are teaching a 23 year old girl that Galyon gave a pamphlet to during the big Festival that was here for ten days. She came to English class and just couldn't leave. Wanted to know what the feelings were she was having. Of course we were glad to share the answer. She has been returning for teaching and attended Sac. meeting yesterday. Wonderful girl.
We finally found one of our less-active sisters Sat. About an hour and a half away. That is the reason she doesn't attend church. Has a great testimony. She is from Peru, joined the church in Italy (mother is member) at the age of 24. Two really cute kids. They live on five archers...20 pigs, many rabbits, chickens and a goat. They have a garden and live pretty much off their land. We are going back in a couple weeks to help harvest the field corn for their animals. They live with her in-laws which is very common here.
We had a great Zone and District Conf. two weeks ago. A member of the 70's and counselor to our area Pres'cy came and taught us. We had the only investigators at the new member/investigator meeting and more new members that anyone else in the country. We were so proud. (Oh yea, we're not suppose to have PRIDE). It's a great sacrifice to travel by train and with little money for a ticket. The church helps in this area. One investigator drove three of our sisters which was great. We really need to get this work going and get young adults to our institute. That is our goal.
I know this church is true and the Lord wants these people to know of his restoration. So many people have never heard of the church. We've got to have a way of letting this younger generation know of the truth. That was the prophecy given in 1993.

Well, we went to Ljubljana..Slovenia and got our car. The ride to Ljubljana was a little scary since the AP's were running late and there is not much control of speed on the roads. Need I say more?
The fireside was great. The only thing that could have been better is.....if it were my three sons doing the fireside on their missions.
Our car has a radio and cd player. When the cd that was already in there started to play...the song was.."It's 5'O'clock Somewhere" Oh my, did this remind me of Cami. She loves that song. With the car comes the added blessing of going to Celia, Slovenia every other week and teaching Institute. About one and a half hours away. During the winter this could get interesting. Of course...teaching will be interesting also.
Things are running along as normal. Visiting, teaching and studying. We are looking forward to the vacations being over and everyone coming home from the sea.
Right now Varazdin is having its yearly Festival. People from all over Europe and even some bands from America. So many people. It's fun to just walk around and let ourselves be seen. We have seen less-actives which is good and lots from our English classes. This will run for 10 days.
We hear the family reunion was wonderful.....which I figured it would be. We are doing great. Loving these wonderful people and hoping to teach many more. We need to build a good foundation here for the church to get going on.
We did have our Medieval night and had about 35. We were pleased with that.
We hope you are all well....So sorry to hear about Aunt Wilma. She's not alone any more.

Challenges, but life is good
Some good news for me. We called the Dr. in Germany to see if I could get some meds I'm out of...he faxed it...we got what we could here...then a couple going to Slovenia got the rest and brought it to me today. My blood has been staying in the high 100's or over 200...not good. I should be ok for that until I get some from home. The rest of the med's I'm not as worried about.
Now the other news...we got a call from the AP's yesterday telling there was a car waiting for us at the mission home. Two more couples went home and the one car was offered to another couple...they didn't want it...so we get it. Probably 5 or 6 months until another couple comes. Then we'll trade off again.
Well, we've been trying to figure out how to get to the mission home without any missionaries to show us the steps on the train..transferring in Zagreb and of course we speak the language so well. Then today the AP's called back and asked when we were going...Thurs. we thought. We are flexible if needed. Well, you could go tomorrow we will come and get you. The mission pres. three sons are here and giving a fireside at the mission home tomorrow night for the missionaries there and we want to go. Want to go with us. Well, you didn't have to ask us twice. Ride, meal, fireside, car....now isn't the life just wonderful.
We're having a great time with these three youth the elders ran into. Two boys and a girl. The girl is quite heavy and no self-steam. Whenever, we get to the church there she is and the boys if their not working. They came to church Sunday. Maybe I'll have more Seminary student's than we thought. I know their hungry for attention, but their reading the Book of Mormon and always coming. We'll see what happens.
We've had like fall weather. A little warmer today and expecting a storm on Thurs. thru Sun. We'll see.
Life is great. Vanje(this girl) is helping me with some Croatian words and phrases. She speaks mal(little) English. She laughs at me alot. I taught her the two up four down card game. Language of the heart.
I'll be waiting to hear from the family about the Family Reunion in Oregon. I'm sure it was great.

The Parable of the Stolen Suit Case
Yes, we go to Zone Conference thinking all is well and our suit case gets stolen out of the church. The church is on the second floor of a building downtown Zagreb. Who would think someone would come up there looking for something to take. Oh well, I hope with all the church material we had they'll get curious about the church.
We actually had a great conf. We gave our car up, so rode the train home with the missionaries. It was an easy 40 min. walk home without having a suit case to haul. Look on the bright side of things helps.
We love our new missionaries. We have a very young group. It will help them get this language down. Gaylon and I are plugging alone and getting by with the language we know. Malo po malo. Little by little.

Invited to Mission Pres.Council
It's been a busy week. We were invited to the Mission Pres. Council. This council is for the zone leaders, one set of sisters, and one of the couples. The AP's are mostly in charge.
We went to Zagreb and picked up the Serbia missionaries that had come in on the train. The missionaries went and stayed with the Slovenia missionaries and we stayed at the mission home. Had a nice visit with the Mission Pres. and Sis. Weight.
Council meeting started at 9:30, then lunch and all headed home. We took an additional elder back with us. He's only about 6'6" so it was a little close. Great time and we felt honored to be invited.
Fri. the Lunt's and Mill's came to Varazdin and we went out to the Gypsy camp. The elder went to interpret. They have a King that is in charge. The church is looking at adding a room onto their school. Our finding will be turned into the leaders in Germany. I think we got as close to Hungary as you could get without going into the country.
Our activity was Pirate Night. We danced, messed around and ate chili. There were 45 in attendance. Our biggest group. Most were from our English classes. With these two missionaries going home, it brought more of a crowed.
These two missionaries spoke at church today and the Mission Pres. and wife came and spoke so that brought out a few more people. We had 28. If all our regulars had been there we would really have had a group. We served lunch after before everyone left. Lots go home after the first meeting.
Yes, Sister Crosby and Elder Brunner have gone home. I hope we can keep our strong district going with these two new missionaries. I'm sure it will be. Eight missionaries are going out plus another couple and eight missionaries coming in.

These two missionaries spoke at church today and the Mission Pres. and wife came and spoke so that brought out a few more people. We had 28. If all our regulars had been there we would really have had a group. We served lunch after before everyone left. Lots go home after the first meeting.
Yes, Sister Crosby and Elder Brunner have gone home. I hope we can keep our strong district going with these two new missionaries. I'm sure it will be. Eight missionaries are going out plus another couple and eight missionaries coming in.

Continued from the last one...
I didn't even tell you the most exciting thing of the week. We went to a small town 15 min. from here to find an investigator. Called when we got there and he said he would come to us. We parked never being there before. Saw an old church and looked around and found a map of the city. Found we had parked by a ruins.
We walked across this little park and there was this old Roman Ruins that the foundation is being preserved. What an amazing find. There was a hot springs right in the middle. They used the water as a pool for healing and we found how they directed the hot water to go through the walls for heating. Everything about it was amazing. Our investigator took us all through it and explained it. He has done a lot of reading about it. I will have pictures on hansenherd.org.
Also we went to another wedding. It was the Seventh Day Adventists Church. Lots of music, very nice. One of the singers was a professional singer from Norway. He was dressed all in his family history attire. He was very interesting to talk to. He had read parts of the BofM and didn't have one. Yes, of course we ran and got him one. Got a picture with him.

Not a lot going on this week. We were asked to drive to the other end of the country to deliver the baptismal font....but the baptism didn't happen. We have a portable dough-boy pool that gets moved from baptism to baptism.
I did get a package together and give to a couple to give to Cami's Branch Pres. in Hungary. Isn't that fun to think we can have something hand carried to her. Now we'll wait til Wed to see if she got it.
We've had some great rain storms this week. Great meetings. There is one young man that wants to get baptized, but he leaves for the Sea for a month. Sure hope he continues to read the Book of Mormon. He speaks great English. He did come to church today which was great.
This will be Elder Brunner and Sister Crosby's last week in the mission field. It.will be interesting to see what changes come our way. They have been great missionaries.
My thoughts have been with Miranda this. I'm anxious to get her box # at the MTC.
She will be so great.

Youth Conference
This week up to Fri. was pretty normal. Some good visits and lessons.
Friday we took Renata to the Youth Conference. It was little over an hour away. We did everything at the hotel. There were two large pools and a nice sized kids pool. The meals were buffet and the music at night (under our window) went on all night.
We had 23 kids from three counties. Slovania, Serbia and Croatia. Five languages represented. The main speaker in the work shops came from Germany. He did speak English which was nice for us. Bro. Fingerja was the CES rep. from the eastern Germany region. This was like a kick off for Seminary. Our one girl will enter high school this fall so we will get this program going with her.
Bro. Fingerja also went through the Strengh of Youth booklet. Dress standard, speech and the whole works. It was great and Renata had a great time. Beautiful area. And I thought I was coming to a third world country.....not.

The Great Adventure
The great adventure this week was finding the Hotel where our Youth Conference is going to be held this next week. We thought we'd better go find it in advance and it was a good thing. We did find it....three and a half hours trip. It took us one and a half to get home. What does that tell you. My comment about the trip....It was a beautiful ride. We went around a mountain then up over it to find the place. We have one girl going and been asked to chaperon. Isn't that to bad...three days in a hotel. It's like a little resort and we will do all our activities and eating right there. More to come on that topic.
We've had a great week of teaching and service. The fellow from the political mtg. I told you about has been to church the last two Sundays. Yesterday he brought his 15 year old daughter.
On Wed. we went to a members farm and Gaylon and the missionaries helped him turn his hay and a few things to help him get ready to leave for the sea to work a couple of months. Yes, Susie, Gaylon finally got his hands good and dirty. Bro. Lukacek is our 2nd, Counselor and will be missed.
Two of our active members were married on Sat. They will go to the temple in Germany in Sept.

Happy Father's Day to all you Fathers
What a week. We started the week going to Slovenia to our Senior Conf. It was great meeting the new couples and just spending some time together. We did some touring and went to a horse show. We did lots of eating. We even saw a few cows grazing there.
We did some visiting and teaching with the missionaries. Then Fri. we had Mexican night for our activity. It was great. 25 other than missionaries came. The new member said, "To bad we don't have this many at church." I don't remember that these people don't experience the different cultures like we do in America. We had to make our own tortillas. The are about $1 a piece here. The people loved the food. Now that we've done Hawaiian and Mexican they want us to do Chinese. I told them that would be easy.....I'd just make rice.
We had an interesting day today. We were invited to this luncheon and had no idea what we were getting into. The Ambassador of Serbia and the Ambassador of Norway were there. They put us on one of the head tables representing one of the religious groups and introduced us twice. I only knew that we were introduced when everyone looked at us.
It was a political meeting headed by a Serb here (the elders investigator& the one that invited us) for the Serbs and Croatians to untie. It was great. We were welcomed royally (if that's a word). So many didn't even know our church was in the area. Good exposure. After that there were dances and songs on an outside stage in full costume from the different countries of eastern Europe. This was all done in some little village half an hour from here. Can you believe it. We did get one girls name and #. She wants to meet with us to practice her English. Shall I start her on reading the Book of Mormon ha ha.
We've had a great warm week ending with a little rain. Love to everyone.

We started our week off with making strawberry jam. I think we made five batches. Not sure what other berries they'll have for us.
We have been able to get some much needed visiting done since we have the car back. It's been fun to get back into some of these homes. It's hard to get an apt. but then they don't want you to leave.
We got three lessons taught this week, plus doing visits with the missionaries. We started meeting with a member of our English class. She doesn't really think there is a God. She says, everybody has a story and that's ok by me. We'll see. She did take a Book of Mormon in English and loves to read. She comes to most of our activities so a friendship has already been established.
Gaylon and I were in charge of the activity this week. I am so not creative. We did a mystery dinner. Everyone had a good time. It was Gaylons birthday and the missionaries had taken us out to lunch earlier.

Visit to the Sea
Another great week. We went to Zagreb Wed. After the missionaries interview we went shopping and checking out more of the city. Elder Brunner and Sis. Crosby are both going home in July so this was their last zone conf. The will truly be missed.
Zone Conf. was great. Always good to meet and visit with the couples. So fun to sit and just speak English.
After Zone Conf. we took the Blatters home to Zadar, by the sea. It was a couple hour drive. We got there in the evening so we visited. The next morning we went walking to tour the city. The old city was built on a peninsula and is still standing. A lot of the outer wall that was built to protect the city still stands. There are modern shops and restaurants build within the old buildings.
We then walked around the other side and there is new tile built in all along the sea. No beach. On the end they built in holes and pipes going down to the water. When the waves come in it plays like a pipe organ. Beautiful. It was quite windy so there was lots of music.
On the by side there has been a bridge built between the old and new cities.
Was so glad that we could go down there. The Blatters are also going home in July so we got as much visiting and instruction in that we could.
We had about a four hour ride home. Great week.
After a great conference we are ready to conquer Varazdin. We are great and enjoying a cool down in the weather.

First baptism in Varazdin/New Grandson
Well, Satan did his best , but we had our first baptism in Varazdin. Ana was baptized Sat. and confirmed Sun. She is such a wonderful lady. I think this was my second offer to baptize someone. I told the Elders, I think we better go over that Priesthood thing. I was honored any way. Her son came to the outreach one evening with a friend. I haven't met her girls yet. Sad to say none of them supported her Sat.
On Mon. we took our first field trip to the Trakoscan Castle. About an hour from here on the bus. All six of us went and had a great time. Beautiful area.
We had Polynesian activity Fri. I needed to as Traci a question, so I waited until 7am her time hoping she would be awake. I am so glad I called...she had awakened with her water broke. She was alone with the three boys and upset. I was so glad I had called at that time. It was good for both of us. Gaylene headed down there and made it to see the birth. Tobias was born about nine that evening.....which gave us time to sleep and being awakened about 6:30 with Michelle's call. 7# 13oz 20" long. Small baby for her. Mom and baby both doing well at my last report.
As you can tell, all is well with Elder and Sister Hansen. Baptism....family growing...what else could we ask for. We are truly blessed.

Another week of walking, teaching and walking. It's great
Friday Elder Hansen introducted these people to a Aaronic Priesthood outing. We invited the full branch. We went to the Drava River.....played some games, talked about the Priesthood, eat beans and bread, and roasted marshmallows. This was a new experience for them. Of course we made smores and they were a big hit. We had some musical instruments....played music, danced and had a great time.
It's been a good week. Cooler. Rain a couple days which was good for all these gardens we see. We had lettuce hanging on our door one night when we came home. Guess they are starting to harvest their lettuce. A bouquet of flowers one night. They love to share out of their yards.
We are great and loving these people.

Mother's Day
Great Day. A sister that was here two years ago came with her mother and spoke at church. Then we had a dinner for her and members so that was a good Mother's Day dinner for me.
We had great visits with our kids. Everyone sounded great. Traci called on skype as I was calling Cami so that was fun for us and them. Cami sounds great......frustrated with the language and you can imagine. She mentioned the advantage Miranda will have being able to express her self right as she gets into the mission field. I feel her pain. She loves Poland, her comp. and the district. She will do great.
We are fine. Pretty much the same sort of week as always. Gaylon is gearing up for a Priesthood activity on the River. The Branch is invited. Of course we will start with a service project.....cleaning the area. Some volleyball, thought on Priesthood and food. That food always brings them......same as home.
Gaylon has also had pictures printed about the Book of Mormon stories to put in the Croatian books. The Mission Pres. has now seen them and wants a batch for each missionary in the mission. He feels pretty good about that.

Things in Croatia are great. We've had rain this week which was badly needed. It's not real cold so walking has been fine. I think of Castellia when I walk in the rain.
The missionaries here are gearing up for Mother's Day. I've been getting messages from parents setting up times. And guess what....I get to make a call to. It will be fun to hear from Cami now that she has been in Poland a few weeks. I hope it will work to talk to all my kids.
The Elders have a baptism coming up. That will be fun. I am working with a lady that doesn't want to commit until she has seen a baptism. We are reading the Book of Mormon together. We're at 3Nephi. I have shown her the "Testament" Movie. We are so glad to have that and share it with these people.
Gaylon and I continue to be over the Outreach. Also each month we share FHE, activity on Fri., and sports day on Sat. with the young missionaries as far as being in charge. We stay pretty busy. We're working on getting a service project going that we can all help with.

I was sending this to Suzie and decided to finalized the week so I'll add it to the Blog. We are great and enjoying these people. Good to hear from some of you this week.
Thank you again for yet another great scripture. It is hard when you know the gospel and want to share it with people that really need it. So many are looking for peace and don't know where to find it. I've just finished Preach My Gospel and starting on the D&C. I'm nearly done with the BofM again. It is fun to have this time to study.
I'd love to be able to see the PBS special. I remember it being advertised during conf.
I'm glad you business is growing. Be patient and it will happen. Contrats. on your calling. How fun to work with my daughter. Michelle will be great in YW.
Having no car is just fine. We love the exercise and your face to face with the people. Our neighbors are fun to greet now that they are getting to know us.

We've had a great week. Tues. I got a call from Cami. She was at the Chicago airport waiting to leave America. How exciting for her.
Wed. we left for Zagreb. The sister rode with us. We met our Elders at the church and after the interviews we went on a 4-5 hour tour of Zagreb. Elder Brunner had spent a year serving their. It was great. Wonderful building and Cathedral's. We even had a reporter spot us and interview us. Not sure if the article made the papers.
Thurs. was an all day Zone Conf. which was great. Our first train ride. The country side is so beautiful. So green and rich. We saw lots of farmers working their land. Our walk home was about 40 min.
Fri. I had another reading in the B of M with a sister that meets me at the church. We had a wonderful time together and I challenged her to come to church. She believes the B of M is true.
Sunday was Branch Conf. 30 people there and guess.....Darinka came. She really enjoyed the meeting. Gaylon got a second conf. which will be great.
The work is going great and we are really loving it here. We can just feel that this area should be opening up. We're trying to get into all the members homes and strengthen this branch.

It was great. Wonderful building and Cathedral's. We even had a reporter spot us and interview us. Not sure if the article made the papers.
Thurs. was an all day Zone Conf. which was great. Our first train ride. The country side is so beautiful. So green and rich. We saw lots of farmers working their land. Our walk home was about 40 min.
Fri. I had another reading in the B of M with a sister that meets me at the church. We had a wonderful time together and I challenged her to come to church. She believes the B of M is true.
Sunday was Branch Conf. 30 people there and guess.....Darinka came. She really enjoyed the meeting. Gaylon got a second conf. which will be great.
The work is going great and we are really loving it here. We can just feel that this area should be opening up. We're trying to get into all the members homes and strengthen this branch.

Ground Breaking
We've had another great week, but the high light was the ground breaking of our first chapel in Croatia. This will be built in Zagreb which is the capitol city for Croatia. It is a beautiful piece of land getting the branch out of down town. All the missionaries in the country were there. We don't know many yet, but what a great way to get acquainted. Watch for us in the Church News.
Cami is excited to be heading for Poland this next week. Her dated got moved to the 17th. Don't know why. One of the sisters has not received her passport yet. We need a miracle on Mon. The girls will be singing at the farewell fireside. There will be about 450 missionaries. Exciting.
Elder Hansen and I are doing fine. Once he gets his leaders called and all these reports figured out maybe he can relax a little. We are going to start teaching a lady from our English class this next week and hopefully her daughter also. Out Reach is our main responsibility so doing a little teaching will be a nice change.
We have had beautiful weather. I can see it will get a little warm here. We give up our car at Zone Conf. this next week. Now we will be finding different routes through the city.
We hope you are all well. Our hearts have sure gone out to those families that suffering right now at home. Thank you for your support and prayers.

Great Easter
Easter Sunday in Croatia. We've had a great day. About 20 at church. Three of the missionaries spoke. They gave me their English copies so I could understand. Our District Pres. was here again. His in laws love close by and they were spending the weekend. FYI Elder Brunner that's here.......his Grandparents served here seven yeas ago and baptized our District Pres. Pres. Sven Sam Bunjak. Pretty good huh.
It was overcast earlier. Little rain last night after a very warm day. However, the sun came our and we had lunch with the missionaries and some of the members in our back yard.
Anxious to talk to our family tonight. The Bernhardts and going to Josh's so we can talk with skype.
We were planning on going to another Castle tomorrow, but I guess its closed for the day. The Monday after Easter. It has been so busy this weekend. We went to the square which is the middle of town and just walked around. Bought some fruit and vegetables and watched people.
Off to an appointment. Love to everyone.

Happy Easter every one
Hey,
Getting ready to call it a day, but I'll take a minute. We got to see all of conference. Burnt the midnight oil both nights. It was surely worth it. The talks we all so great. We had this lap top over at the church so the Croatians could understand. I stayed here so I could just let it all sink in. I didn't need two languages going. What a blessing for these people though. I don't know why some else hadn't done this for these people. We paid an installment fee and that's it. No monthly payments. How does it work you say....I don't know but it's in.
Big weekend with Easter then the next we drive to Zagreb (1Hr) and have the ground breaking for the first chapel in Croatia. Then the next Wed. we go back for Zone Conf. and give up the car. That will be fine. Walking will do us good and the weather should be fine from here on and a little rain won't hurt us anyway.
We are fine. We're getting the Proclamation framed for the Mayor and taking it to him. We'll see how that goes over.
We're also getting pictures made and inserting them into the B of M according to the stories. We've got to do something to get this town to pay attention.

Our first written letter
We got our first written letter today from Miranda Pattersen. However, isn't e-mail a great blessing?
This week has just been pretty normal. We have been doing a lot of visiting out side of town while we have the car. The country side is getting so pretty but, it is so strange to see these fields with absolutely no live stock on them. They say their in Slovenia. I miss seeing live stuff.......All we've seen are dogs and cats.
We had a house full for church Sunday. Phone calls pay off. About 35. Not bad. Now we've got to get work for this week. Well have fast Sunday as usual since Conf. won't start until 6pm. We are going to start a break the fast together with the Branch so visit and get to know each other. I guess they did this years ago and we'd like to get some fellowshipping going.
We love our Elders and Sisters. They are hard working and fun to be with. We all can't wait for Conf. We will burn the midnight oil but it will be fun. Wish the MTC was singing and we could see Cami.
Cami started her first full week of SYL (speak your language). Anxious to see how that went.

We had a great St. Patrick's party Last Fri. The people laughed when we told them what we were going to do. I guess they don't celebrate that here. We played games, danced, eat good food and had a scavenger hunt. You know....for the four leaf clover.
Other than that so far this week we have continue to reach active and less-active members that live out of the city while we still have the car.
Next week we are starting a non.smoking class for seven days. We'll see what a response we get from that. The missionaries are advertising over at the college. We'll see.
Some FYI's You can find no canned soup here, there are no white eggs. I asked what we do for Easter.....got looked at and answered we color the eggs. When you don't have something you don't miss it I guess. They have beautiful fruit stands..their fruit is grown down by the sea. We do have brown sugar but no peanut butter. Our apt. faces south so we get the morning sun in our living room and bedroom. In case you were wondering now you have it.

Branch Pres.
Today, Sunday the 18th. Pres. Dubravko Hrkovac from the Mission Pres.cy came and interviewed us. Elder Hansen is now the Branch Pres.
We were so hoping that a native would be worthy. We have one and he is on the District Council. It is interesting that he does not set Gaylon apart for the calling since he is a set apart missionary.
Then we came home quite late and fed the missionaries a roast dinner with mash potatoes, etc.
We did have one of our investigators there which was great. We were told when we get fifty people there three months, then sixty for three months they would build a chapel here, so you know Elder Hansen's goal now. He told the branch how are kids brought friends and foe to church when we wanted to add on while he was Bishop. Maybe he can get a spark going. He's back at the church tonight working on reports. Oh yea, we probably had 16 at church today so he has his work cut out for him.
Have a good day. We do have day light savings. Next weekend. To bad that will set me back to 9 hours from home again.

Open Market Experience
Today, Sat. wasn't real eventful, but we did go our first open air market. People everywhere. It was fun. Gaylon found him a straw hat. We bought fruit and vegetables. We did get meat but it wasn't hanging like we've heard about.
I did take a few picture, now I need to figure out how to put them up. Oh yea, we bought some flowers to put in the pots out in front of the church. In about six planters. The landlord came out and said he was planning on doing it, but a little later. He says it's going to snow next week. We'll see. The weather has been beautiful. The tulip trees are out in full bloom.

Last night we went to the train station to meet the new missionaries coming in. Four of the and two straight from the MTC. I had given Cami the name of the sister coming so she went and met her. Even had her picture taken with her. It was so fun. I even had a letter hand carried that she mailed and was sent back. Old news, but any news is good.
We had our first meeting with the new missionaries and since all are now new but one we are excited to start fresh and see if we can get things going. We start tomorrow night with a St. Patrick party. Hope it will be as much fun as our hoe down.
Gaylon has been working hours on the financial reports. They haven't been done for a while. New leadership will be put in Sunday for the branch.

Yesterday we toured the city Castle that is right in the middle of town. The sisters went with us. Sis. Davis is leaving and hadn't seen it either. This is the oldest city in Croatia and dates back to at least the 900reds. The Castle had a mote around it and also the city had one. Very interesting. We drive by it every day. I'll post pictures when I figure that out.
Sis. Henderson and parents came after english class last night. The sure loved her here. She served 8 months in Varazdin. We had food, music and dancing. It was fun.
Today was transfers and we lost 3 of our 4 missionaries. We'll meet the new ones at the train station tonight.

A full week of work
Our second Sunday so we've had a full week of work. We have worked with the Sister a lot. It's nice while we have the car to see people a ways out of town. Transfers are coming Wed. and we are getting two new Elders and one sister. Cami is going to try and find the sister at the MTC and tell her where she will be going.
Varazdin is about the size of Lodi. The one way streets are driving Gaylon crazy tho. Hopefully we will get this figured out. Very mild winter. They got no snow this year and every thing is beginning to blossom. Of course Gaylon is itching to get his hands dirty. The landlord will have a small garden so I think he will get his chance.
This city is quite old, a castle right in the middle of town. Pretty much any thing we want we can find.....well, I haven't seen peanut butter yet or marshmellow. I'm sure I'll be looking for a few things.
They haven't reorginized our branch yet so another week with local leadership. The missionaries are the ones the people really see anyway. We will survive.
The big news today was the building of a Stake Center in Zagreb. This is where we go for zone conference. About 2 hours away. We meet there now in what was Kreshmir Cosic use to live. He gave it to the church so they would have a place to meet for all their meetings. It is in the middle of town in a large building. In Varazdin we rent a spot, but it is pretty nice.
Elder Hansen and I are over this out reach program. We are there five days a week from about 4-8:30. Different activities each night including english classes.

They have phone numbers!
Talked to Mom this morning. She was upbeat and glad to be getting settled in. They do have a phone now at their place. Keep in mind that they are 8 hours ahead of Utah (and therefore 9 hours ahead of you folks on the west coast).

In the afternoons their time, which would be approximately 8am-noon Utah time they can be reached at the Chapel where they do their outreach program (and can be used as a fax machine). The number is : 00 385 42 232-327
I haven't tried these yet to confirm that they work but I will and update this post if needed.
Along with the phone, DSL was also installed. As soon as they can get their laptop charged and hopefully hooked up wirelessly, they'll be back online, and I can turn this blog back over to them.

More News
Another post added by Steve. The content is from Gaylene who has also talked to mom.
Got a call from mom this morning. She sounded really good and encouraged. She has sent out the incorrect address to some, here is the correct address, and should remain their entire mission:

This may come out a bit spiratic, some things she mentioned are that they are at the Ward house every day. They have game tables for the youth to come and play. Every Friday, they have a big organized activity. This is part of the outreach program that they will be involved in as their assignment.
They are 1 hour from Hungary, and 1 hour from Slovania. They are in the smallest city in the mission. They live in a basement apartment, which will be able to keep cool in the Summer time. They have a washer, but no one there has a dryer for laundry. Speaking of dryer, she plugged in her hair dryer the first day, and fried it. Will be looking for another there.
The house has a huge bathroom. As big as the kitchen she said. The bathroom is covered in beautiful tile. She said there is a lot of tile in the church house as well, in fact the whole thing is tile.
Okay, the car deal. Every 6 weeks when they have a Zone conference, they switch cars with this one couple. So they will be on and off of wheels 6 weeks at a time. They found a back way to walk to the church, but driving around the long way is about a mile. The roads are very narrow, and the people drive very fast. She is surprised with the number of pedestrians, that they do not have more accidents.
Their bed is a hard mattress that sits on the floor. It is not in a frame at all, and is not even as tall as their knees. There is no way to put fitted sheets on, if she had any, so they just lay a sheet over the mattress.
The landlord is not a member, and does not speak any English. She is very nice, and has greeted them warmly bringing them food, etc. She mentioned that the Elder representative looked a bit, well, unkept or something, so she was not impressed, and almost did not rent to the church. This is her first exposure to the church.
She said a lot more, but I was driving the kids to school, and could not take notes, so I don't remember anything else right now.
She said she is doing much better with her attitude about the whole thing, since she has been able to get rest and get her bearings. I guess dad was driven all over town, so has a grasp on where everything is. Their fridge and freezer is very small, but she said she found low fat ice cream, so they have the important things. :)

The eagle has landed!
This post added by Steve. The content is Michelle's email she sent out reviewing her phone conversation with mom from Croatia. I figured I'd put the email here for anyone that may have been missed on Michelle's email blast.
Hello all,
I finally heard from Mom. She called me this morning to tell me that they were alive. It was great to hear her voice. Well let me start from the beginning. They took off from Utah at 8:15 Monday morning and did not arrive in Slovenia until 2:30pm the next day. They had some weather issues in Paris and were grounded for 5 hours. When they got into Slovenia they got all of their luggage but unfortunately it was in shreds, so they carried it around in plastic bags. The Mission president picked them up from the airport and took them back to his house to eat a little something and off they went on a 2 1/2 hour car ride to an other senior couples (the Heath's) home in Croatia, to stay all night. That night they were able to go to dinner with all the senior couples in the mission at a castle in Croatia. Mom said that was a great experience. Wednesday morning they had to be up early to get back into the car for 3 hours to go to zone conference all day. By this time Mom and Dad were exhausted to say the least, so the mission president put them up at a nice hotel to have a good nights sleep. On Thursday the Mission president instructed the Heaths to get Mom and Dad into a new apartment. So they found a basement apartment for 2000 kuna or $360 a month. It has no hot water in the kitchen but it does in the bathroom and a small wall heater and a fridge the size of her trailer fridge. So she said one of her first purchases will be a new large fridge. But the apartment is big. Once they got all of their luggage into the apartment the Heath's took them to the local market to get some food and supplies. Mom was happy to see that they did have brown sugar there but, alas, no sugar free Jell-O. So I am supposed to mail her some as she needs it. The lady that owns the apartment made Mom and Dad lunch, which consisted of ground pork wrapped in cabbage leaves with a sauce over it. Mom said it was pretty good. So today Mom and Dad are helping the branch get ready to put on a hoe down where they are going to serve corn bread and chili. Mom said Dad is loving it.
Mom and Dads main objective is to run an outreach program for youth and young single adults. Every night from 3:00 pm to 8:30 pm they will have some type of activity for them. There is a room set up with dart boards and pool tables for the youth to come and enjoy themselves. I guess it has been a great way of fellowshipping the young people of Croatia.
The town they are in is small. There is about 3000 people. They have to walk to church which is a mile away. They do have a car that they will share with a couple that is 5 hours away. So that will be good for them to have a car some of the time. There is no public transportation in their town.
They will not have internet for 1 week to 1 month. So it might be a while before you get emails from them personally. Mom said to make sure everyone checks her blog because that is where she is going to update everyone on how they are doing.
Mom did admit to me she had a heck of a time when she got there, just because she was so overwhelmed by the lack of sleep and the luggage issues. But she has a husband that kept saying to her "You can do this, Marilyn." What a blessing this will be for both of them!

Entering MTC Feb. 19, 2007
Well, we woke up to 4-5 inches of snow. It was so beautiful. What a fun way to start our mission. We arrived at the MTC a little before 11. We found our room, checked in and then Steve and family started to leave. On our way down the hall past the cafeteria we decided to poke our heads in to see what we could see. Two tables away there was Cami. She spotted us first.
Cami is doing great. She has two companions and then there are six elders all going to Poland.
We had our orientation a few hours then time for dinner. Of course now I know where Cami will be sitting.
After dinner we came to our room to somewhat unpack and then do our reading assignment.
Tomorrow night when the General Authority comes Cami and I are both going to be in the choir?
It’s been a great day and our meetings start at 8 each morning.
We have our cell phone and it’s even legal.
We’ll do our best to keep in touch.

Starting out.....Cami to MTC
We'll here we are. The first of many emails. We've had a couple of incredible days. Starting with the weekend. Thank you to helped, we had a great time and visited with lots of people.
The plane ride was fine on Mon., but Sally was at the airport to meet us and that was great. We had a nice visit with her before Steve came.
Tues. we went to the SLC temple. It had been a long time for Gaylon and I and of course Cami loved it. We stayed there for quite awhile. When you linger there is always a worker that would like to fill you in on a few things. It was great.
Over to the JSB for lunch and watched the movie of the restoration. Airport to get Miranda. Then of course they were up all night. How fun to have sure a great friend.
WED.....breakfast....uncle Ned joined us. He seems fine. The MTC was great and it made Cami so excited and anxious to FINALLY get started. You could just feel her vibes. She's off and running and will be a great missionary.

The plane ride was fine on Mon., but Sally was at the airport to meet us and that was great. We had a nice visit with her before Steve came.
Tues. we went to the SLC temple. It had been a long time for Gaylon and I and of course Cami loved it. We stayed there for quite awhile. When you linger there is always a worker that would like to fill you in on a few things. It was great.
Over to the JSB for lunch and watched the movie of the restoration. Airport to get Miranda. Then of course they were up all night. How fun to have sure a great friend.
